DAIRY SUPPLIERS.
NEW ZEALAND COMPANY. ! COMMITTEES IN CONFERENCE. IMPORTANT REMITS DISCUSSED. (By Telegraph.—>-Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day. The annual meeting of suppliers' committees of the New Zealand Co-opera-tive Dairy Company was held at the Theatre Royal, Hamilton, yesterday. Mr. Dynes Fulton, chairman of directors, presided. The following remits were discussed for recommendation to the annual meeting of shareholders to-day:— Ngahinepouri Committee: That the directors be requested to consider the advisability of importing sulphate of ammonia and sulphate of potash for their shareholders. Mr. H. H. Sterling assured the meeting that the company was watching very carefully the interests of its suppliers in the"matter of cheap manures. He pointed out, however, that the total orders for sulphate of ammonia last year through the company's sources amounted only to 74 tons. Mr. W. H. Worster moved, as an addition to the remit, that the Government be urged to put Arapuni to full use, and to undertake the production of sulphate of ammonia and other synthetic manures {here.
The remit was carried, without the addition. The Onewhero, Whatawhata, and Bombay and Paparata committees each submitted remits dealing with th© cream cartage, and they were amalgamated, to read: That in view of the increasing amount of the cartage subsidy borne by the company as a whole, we recommend that the cartage contracts be handled by the outside department and under the direct control of the outside organiser, the company to have the right to decide the contractor without reference to the committee. Mr. Glasgow (Onewhero) pointed out that the cartages increased by £4000 last year, despite the fact that the freight on cream decreased by £800. This he attributed to the placing of the cartage contracts by the local committees. Several speakers considered the local committees were the best judges of who should have the contracts for their particular districts. The suppliers should have the right to choose the man they thought best to handle their cream. One speaker attributed the increase in cartage to the additional amount of cream carted. 3lr. Glasgow, in reply, said the committees had not the final say in placing the contracts at present. The object of the remit was not so much concerning the expenditure of the committee's own money, but the money of other suppliers. The remit was lost by an overwhelming majority. Huntly West committee recommended that every effort be made to have the Dairy Industries Amendment Act further amended to provide that all testing and grading officer? at all dairy factories and creameries, shall be in the direct employment of and responsible solely to the Government; and that all grading and testing records, at all dairy factories and creameries, shall be subject to Government inspection.'
?>lr. Dynes Fulton considered that every supplier who was loyal to his fellows would support the remit, and they would learn for the first time in the history of the industry the true position regarding their cream. The remit was carried. Huntlv West forwarded a further remit: That the services of the company's laboratory be availed for research work in soil deficiency and its relation to disease in dairy stock, a scheme to be drawn up whereby suppliers in any areas selected for research work shall give all possible practical assistance in the carrying out of experiments, research work in any district to be conditional upon such assistance being given, other co-operative companies to be invited to participate in the scheme on a basis of proportionate representation and contribution. Mr. Fulton stated it was absolutely impossible for the company's laboratory to undertake such work. It already had too much to do. It was decided to urge the Government to undertake such work at the Massey Agricultural College.
