MID-OCEAN RESCUE.
DOG LEAPS OVERBOARD.
QUARREL WITH SHIP'S CAT.
LINER LOWERS A LIFEBOAT.
"Man overboard," was the cry that went up on the liner Cambridge, which arrived from Liverpool this morning. At the time the" steamer was in midPacific, but instead of a man it was found that the cause of the alarm was an Alsatian dog'which was being shipped to a consignee at Lyttelton. The ship's cat was nursing a litter of kittens, and the Akation on becoming too inouiaitive received a few scratches on his nose, and a few more on his back. He fled rapidly, made a bound, and next foment was in the sea.
The dog soon dropped astern, but struck out and began to breast the ocean swell, despite the fact that land was thousands of miles away. The Cambridge turned on her course, a lifeboat was lowered, and the dog was picked up. The Cambridge was quite a floating menagerie on arrival. There were two Alsation dogs, a fox terrier, a racehorse, likewise the ship's cat and her kittens.
