STAMP DUTY.

IS IT -QUITABLE? Following upon representations made by the Wangauoi Chamber of Commerce, the council of the Canterbury Chamber recently obtained from the Minister for stamp duties, details of the revenue received from this source. In a brief discussion which took place on this subject, Mr. C. P. Agar, president, said revenue had to be found from some source to cany on the affairs of State, and the stamp duty and receipt tax were spread veiiy fairly over the community as ;i whole. If a. reduction was made other taxation would have to be passed. Mr. K. W. Krbinson: Is it not a fact that the more they fret the' more they spend? Mr. Agar I am not well enough up in affairs of State to answer that. Mr. P. H. Harris moved that the Wanganui Chamber be informed that the council considered it was inadvisable at present to make any change. The taxation is not pressing too hard on anj'onc. The motion was carried.
