A COAL DEPRESSION.
Bavin Government Takes Action. DWINDLING INDUSTRY. (Received 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The Bavin Government, is taking definite action to solve the coal trade depression. The Premier stated that the Government will insist on the reduction of the price of coal, the high price of which is imposing a heavy burden on the railways, tramways and other facilities in addition to keeping up the manufacturing costs. The overseas trade which absorbed 3,500,000 tons in 1913, now stood at only 1,500,000 tons. The inter-State trade had similarly dwindled. A conference of parties interested, including the Government, is now trying to arrive at a basis for a compromise which will enable the industry to be put on a stable footing.
