PAROCHIALISM DENIED.
APPOINTMENT OF TEACHERS, j AUCKLAND HOARD'S REPLY. | NATIONAL GRADING USED. "Wo recognise the national graded j li-t. and will continue to do so." writes i Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the Auckland i Education Board, in regard to alleged ' j parochialism in the metliod of appoint- j ing teachers in lhe Auckland district. j In a letter to the secretary of the New j Zealand Educational Institute, Mr. Burns i writes: "The applications before the meeting of the Auckland Education Board were from two ungraded Southern teachers (one being uncertificated) asking to be placed on our list for employment. and as we cannot find employment for all of our graded teachers, it was little use adding these names to our list. You are. aware that an ungraded teacher cannot get employment if there is a graded applicant, so I considered that it would be unkind to encourage these applicants when there was no chance of their getting employment. It was reported in tho Press that there was a shortage of teacher-, in the South, so thinking that they would have a better chance there. 1 made the remark as reported. We recognise the national graded list, and wiii continue to do so irrespective of education district. At nearly every meeting of our board we appoint teachers from other districts."
Mr. E. C. Purdie, secretary of the Auckland Education Board, writes:— ' With reference to the Press Association report of an editorial from the "Lytteltnn Times' that appeared in your issue of Friday last, tilting at the Auckland Education Board for alleged parochialism in the appointment of teachers, facts speak for themselves. During 1927 the Auckland Board appointed from other education districts 42 teachers, and this year to date 3S. The board, in making ap]H>intments, has scrupulously adhered to the regulations governing the appointment of teachers, and has not, in any one instance, differentiated against a teacher from one of the other education districts."'
