RUSH FOR OYSTERS.
CITY DEPOT BESIEGED. RESTAURANT SUPPLIES SHORT. Oysters are being sold in Auckland faster than they arrive, and the demand this week has been exceptional, said the Inspector of Fisheries, Mr. F. P. Flinn, to-day. "Sold out" was tlie sign at the Government oyster depot entrance yesterday, but this morning the position was relieved by the arrival of two shipments from the North. Pickers who went to work on the beds have suffered to some extent from illness, and it has been difficult to obtain a supply of 500 bags a week, but their condition to-day was reported to be better, and with a continuance of good weather Auckland should be fully supplied next week. Extra pickers have been put on, and over 500 bags of oysters are expected to be available next week. Further shipments are expected to reach the city on Monday and Tuesday mornings. During the present week the demand has been exceptional because of country visitors. Restaurant owners have found themselves embarrassed in their attempt to supply oyster meals, and complain that they have been severely rationed when they could have done a good business.
