TRENTHAM JOTTINGS.

KING LU FOR STUD. CATKIN SCRATCHED FOR WINTER CUP. ROY REED TO RIDE HAITI. (By Telegraph.— Special to "Star.") TRENTHAM, Thursday. Matters are quiet at Trentham nowadays, The only horses doing anything like fast work are those engaged at the Grand National meeting. The course proper is being used for all work at present, and trainers are glad to give their rising two-year-olds some experience round the turns. This morning there was a stinging frost, but a mild day followed. Decoy Bird and Roi de Val sprinted half a mile in 54s under a good pull. Standard took 52 l-5s and Royal Damon 53s for four furlongs, the latter going easily. Panther and Historic did steady work. Beau Cavalier (C. Scott) strode out very freely over a mile and a-quarter of strong work, running the last seven in 1.48. He pulled hard all the way, and is evidently none the worse for his racing last week. It is understood that a trip to Melbourne was in train this week for the <l ßeau," but it did not suit tlie plans of his trainer, S. Tooman. Beau Cavalier is therefore remaining at Trentham until Monday, when he will be shipped South by 'the Wahine to fulfil Grand National engagements. Now that Glendowie has been scratched for the Grand Notional Steeplechase it is likely that S. Henderson will ride Beau Cavalier. King Lu will not be at Riccarton. It is tlw intention of Mr. R. B. Hines to put King Lu to the stud this coming season. With Kin? Lu out of tlie Winter Cup, A. Tinker is free to accept another mount, and he will be on either Mint or Rinjr Bov. R. Reed's mount in the Winter Cup will Kaiti. Last year Kaiti finished fourth in the rare with 9.3, beinjj in front fifty vards off the post. This vc»ir lias 71b piore, but his form is good, and he should run well. Reed has ridden him in his latest successes, and would be unlikely to accept a mount that he did not think had a reasonable chance. Bourse was schooled three times over the pony hurdles at Trentham yesterday morning, and it is thought th-t the course of iumping may improve her for fiat racing. There is a chance that, the rising four-vear-old srelding Dishonoured (Paper ">T or»e V —Tn>»wi;nientl may be s<VM bv Mr. A. R. Williams to Mr. V. Riddiford. in which case he Mill ioin S. J. Reid's active string at Trentham. A. Gooseman lias started to <r!ve hi« two-vear-old fiUv. bv Acre out of P a bit of sprinting work, and yesterday t-.1.n shap°d verv satisfactorily in her initial effort. Rene threw all winners, «wl tlie In test. Lady Rone, looks like being another smart galloper.

Stagliunter is getting through daily useful tasks at Trentham. He is booked for the South for the Grand National meeting. with Royal Damon and Slanritid, although he is not engaged there. Staghuntcr is to race in the Wanganui Guineas, and as there is little chance of giving him a race prior to the mile classic, he should benefit considerably by his trip to Riccarton. Catkin has been scratched for the Winter Cup, and will not make the trip to Riccarton next month.
