"FIRST ROUND LOST."
'BETTER TRAINED NEXT TIME." t ■■■ By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Who will win the final round in the iglit over methods of marketing New lealand dairy produce? Mr. J. R. HamIton (Awarua) committed himself to a trophecy in {he Honse to-clay, despite mfriendly interruptions from a fellow nember of his party, Mr. J. A. Nash Palmerston North), who strongly adrocates free marketing. Mr. Hamilton asked what was the eeult of free marketing for some of the S'ew Zealand cheese factories this seaion ? They sold to merchants, and w;ere now discovering that factories which icmsigned to London were getting £10 i ton more for their cheese. People were saying there should be less Government in business, continued Mr. Hamilton, but rcliat happened among manure manufacturers in the way of raising prices against the farmer? Despite these lessons some people repeated that there should l>e no interference. They wanted freedom for the merchant to exploit the farmers, so that they could make thousands of pounds out of dairy' suppliers. "Propaganda was able to beat us in the first round," continued Mr. Hamilton, "but there may be a few more rounds, and the probability is that the farmers will be better trained than the merchants next time, because thev have a chance to work up their muscles so that in the last round thev .will get in th« oimch wbVh means success." Mr. Nash: The Dairy Board lost every ron^d!
Mr. Hamilton: We know what they | had against them! j — |
