"OF NATIONAL IMPORTANCE."
W AITEMAT A BRIDGE.
PETITION TO PARLIAMENT. *
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON', Friday.
The agitation for the construction of the Waitemata Harbour bridge was advanced a stagfc to-day, when Mr. A. Harris (Waitemata) presented to the House a petition asking that the necessary steps be taken by Parliament for the erection of the bridge. The member for Waitemata, in presenting the petition, dumped on the top of his desk several bundles of printed petitions, all fully signed—l7,ooo all told. The petition sets out that the Waitemata Bridge Committee is representative of all interests advantageously affected. It says the committee has unquestionable evidence of the advantages to be gained by the direct connection of the northern and -southern shores of the Waitemata by means of a bridge. Having consulted many influential persons and organisations, the committee fe convinced that the measure has strong support in the Auckland province. Parliament is asked to take the necessary- steps towards the construction of the bridge as a work of .national importance.
