NOTES FROM WAIKATO.

VERY LITTLE DOING. WILTSHIRE'S , NATIONAL TRIP UNDECIDED. It is the off season this way with trainers, and the work being carried out on the tracks is very limited. Next month will see a livening up in preparation for the new term. There is no definite decision yet as to whether 'Wiltshire is to go to the Grand National meeting. He is getting enough work, however, to find him in the right condition if the important task should be asked of him. Waikato sportsmen were pleased to learn of Pouri's win in the Wellington Steeplechase. His trainer, J. F. Tutchen, and his rider, Ernie Warner, have not had much 'of the "big plums" of recent times, and this may indicate a change for the better. •

Te Kara is still in -work with A. Cook's team at Te Awamutu. The General Latour gelding is likely to-make an appearance at the early spring meetings. At the opening of last season he won the Avondale Cup. As he keeps sound there is no reason why h e should not yet get a stake.

Te Koroke did not fulfil his engagements at the Wellington meeting. The son of Humbug and Tigritiya was being looked to to run well in the south, but his many followers will now have to await the new term before they have the opportunity to "follow their fancy" once again.

Ramblin' Kid was in a bad way a short time Tmck, but the Te Rapatrained hurdler is pulling round. After being brought back from the tracks one tnorning the Winterbourne gelding collapsed, and veterinary attention had to be given. The trouble appeared to be inwardly, but Ramblin' Kid is coming round again.

Mangani's • jumping engagements at Trentham this week not kept. The Day Comet gelding had not been shaping up to expectations in his recent racing, and a respite was decided on for him.

A promising juvenile in W. Stone's team at Te Awamutu, is a bay gelding "by Chief Ruler from Lucella, who is a brother to The. Begum, the latter of whom had raced well in two-year-old events this season. Although he is only twenty-one months the Chief Ruler— Lucella gelding is developed like a three-year-old. Among classic engagements set down for him is the Australian Derby of -1929.

Hangawera was taken south from the Waikato to contest minor cross-country racing at Trentham. The Chesterfield gelding ran unplaced the first' day, and was brought back to Te Rapa without making any further appearances at the meeting.

The Begum (Chief .Ruler—Lucella), who had five seconds to her credit during the racing of the present season, will continue to be among the horses prepared by W. Stone at Te Awanautu. This filly has undoubted pace, and with the improvement she will make witli age, should be a useful sort next season.

Macroom has not yet undertaken any serious work, but wiil be ready to be sent along shortly in view of the deeds of the new term. The Archiestown mare has been a good stake-earner this season, and there is every prospect that she will also acquit herself well next term. Macroom, \who is a, member of M. J. Carroll's team, is a solid little customer wbo has already given evidence that she will go a middle, distance with success.
