PAEROA BOROUGH.

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) PAEROA, Friday. The Paeroa Borough Council held its monthly meeting this evening, the Mayor, Mr. William Marshall, presiding.

The Main Highways Board, writing in connection with the tar-«ealina of main highways in boroughs, notified that the board would subsidise the cost of maintenance up to a width of 66ft. With regard to tar-sealing the board also advised that except under special circumstances, which would be dealt with on their merits, the subsidy would be limited to a width of 30ft.

The works committee reported that the work on the main highways during the month had been confined entirely to the construction of the Puke Road culvert, which had been completed. The gap in the bitumen surface was brought into line with the remainder of the section, and the street again opened for tratiic.

Detailed estimates had been prepared and submitted to the Public Works Department and the Minister telegraphed permission to commence work on June 24. It was commenced the following day and nine local married men had been found work, in addition to those put on at the metal quarry.

On the motion of the Mayor it was decided to donate £5 toward the cost of the preliminary expenses incurred by a district committee in obtaining a public crushing battery for the treatment of goldbearing ore. On the recommendation of the building committee five permits were granted for the erection and alteration of buildinzs, the total value of which was estimated at £1788.

It was decided that the council's inspector be instructed to prosecute without warning any breaches of the by-laws, with particular attention to traffic offences.
