THE DEVONPORT WHARF CEREMONY.
The Mayor of Devonport says lie was not aware of any crowd at the entrance. I wou!d like the Mayor to explain why it was necessary to place a barricade right across the entrance to the wliarf if he had not expected a crowd to be present. Also why was it necessary to have five policemen on duty, in addition to Harbour Board gatemen? Members of Mr. Aldridge's council and guests had to have a way made through the assembled people to get access to the eratewav to ?aia admission. F.. ST. CLAIR B.

[In reply to the above query, Mr. Aldridue stated that when he arrived there were verv tew people standing about and it wa s iini-os" s le to sa >~ whether they were ticket-holders or not. The stalling of the gate had nothing to do with the Borough Council, lior was the presence of the policemen arranged bv thvs borough.—Ed.]
