FISH IN HAURAKI GULF.

TO CONSERVE SUPPLIES.

SUPPORT FOR THE wtt.T.

IMPORTATION OF QUAIL.

The Auckland Acclimatisation Society decided, at its meeting last evening, to support the bill to be presented to the present session of Parliament, which aims to restrict fishing in the Hauraki Gulf. It was stated that yearly fish were getting scarcer in the gulf, and this was unquestionably largely due to the operations of the trawling fleet. The chairman (Mr. F. E. McKenzie) saw no harm in supporting the bill, for, as far as could be gathered, it sought to prevent the depletion of fish. Mr. R H. Bartley was deputed to approach the Minister of Internal Affairs when he visits Wellington next week, with a view to obtaining permission to import 500 Virginian quail from Norfolk Island immediately. Mr. Bartley will be armed with a "petition from Matamata farmers favouring the introduction of the birds. Allocations of Trout. The Taumarunui Societv wrote complaining that the 100,000 trout frv allocated for liberation in its district was insufficient, and suggested that the game allocation was being made at the expense of fiLsh revenue. ** agreed, at the suggestion of Mr. T. S. Withers, to refute the latter charge, and point out to the minor society that the total fry had been limited, and its district had alreadv been allocated l-6th of the quota o'f 600,000 fry. It was also decided to urge upon the Taumarunui body that it should liberate its fry in small streams and tributaries of the Wanganui River in preference to the present procedure of in the river itself. Tie financial statement showed that the society's funds were in credit to the extent of £2220, £1300 of which had been placed on fixed deposit for six months at interest of 4 per cent.
