OBITUARY.

MR. HOWARD J. S. ELLIS. A POPULAR SCHOOLMASTER. Deep regret will be felt by the numerous friends of Mr. Howard .James Shoveller Ellis, who has died so so cm after his retirement on superannuation in February last froin the position of headmaster of New Lynn school. Mr.

Ellis had been suffering from heart trouble and was ordered complete rest for twelve months. He had not been laid up, and as a matter of fart was out in a car on Saturday. His death occurred at his home, "Wliare Maunga," New Lynn, on July 10, at the age of (J3 years. Ho joined the service of the Auckland Education Board in 1880 and had been in charge of schools in different parts of the province ever since. He was appointed to the school at Now Lynn in 1!M0, and during the period he was headmaster the attendance grew from 110 pupils to 700. Mr. Ellis was most popular throughout the district, as he took the keenest interest in all matters affecting the welfare of the children and the progress of the school. He organised the campaign for the improvement and beautifieation of the school grounds. While under his charge New Lynn school won many scholastic honours, especially in the junior national and the Bawling*' scholarships. Mr. Ellis is sm vived l>_v his wife and a familv..

MR. J. N. SAWYER.

One of the pioneers of the Bombay district, Mr. John Newman Sawyer, died last, Friday, aped Tti years. He came to New Zealand in 18(i5 in the ship Bombay, and the settlers named their new home after the vessel that had brought them to the country. Later Mr. Sawyer acquired land at Bombay himself, where he farmed until he retired a few yearn ago and came to live with his daughter in Auckland.

MR. ALFRED GREEN

A resident of New Zealand for 54 years, Mr. Alfred Green died on Sunday at Bulls, aged 75. He was born at Warwick, Warwickshire, England, being the second son of the late Mr. Matthew Green, and came to New Zealand in the ship Conflict. Mr. Green landed at Wellington, then went to Wanganui for two years. He next started business at Bulls, but was forced to retire recently on account of failing health. He was married over half a century ago to Miss Maggie Josephine Collins, of Turakina, who died two and a-half years ago. The following children survive their parents : Messrs. William Green, of Wellington; Albert Green, of Feilding, and Alfred and Leslie Green, of Bulls.

MRS. W. A. CARTER.

The death occurred on Sunday, at Rotorua, of Mrs. W. A. Carter, wife of Mr. W. A. Carter, solicitor of that town. Mrs. Carter was the eldest daughter of Mrs. Gardner, of Takapuna. and the late Mr. David Gardner. She was 52 years of ape.
