THE TAUPO RAILWAY.
The decision to build a railway from Rotorua to Taupo Avas defended in Parliament last week by the Minister of Lands,■'who said that he and the Minister of Public Works, after being all round the Dominion, had come to the conclusion that the area to be tapped "held out most hope of considerable development." This was also the opinion of their advisers. Will the Government give the public all the data on which these opinions are based ! In our comments on the project we have not condemned it outright. We have express 'I serious doubt; we have asked for information" and we have recalled that the' present Prime Minister laid it down four years ago that no railway should be built without the, fullest inquiry into prospects. In the following year there were published in the Public Works Statement reports of this kind from departmental officers on the proposal to extend the Central Otago railway. Are similar repofts>*on the Rotorua-laupo railway in the Gdyeinment's possession? What do the Agricultural Department and the Tourist Department/think of the projeet ? If ;the Government is acting on the principle stated four years ago, it will have had such reports prepared. They'should be published before work is started on the line, I dot after.
