W.C.T.U.
OPEN-AIR SCHOOLS URGED. ADDRESS BY ORGANISER. A meeting of the Auckland Women's Christian Temperance Union was held yesterday. A resolution of sympathy was passed to the relatives of Mesdames Harbutt, Knight and McMillan. They were early and honoured members of the union, and highly esteemed for their sterling qualities and devoted service. A tribute was also paid to the life and work of Mrs. Gaskin, of Greymouth, whose death recently occurred.
An appeal was received from the Playground Association for help in the street collection.
Mrs. Cook read a report from Christchurch recording the success of an openair school there, and the benefit to the health of the children. An ex-teacher who was present at the meeting advocated the support of the open-air schools in Auckland, and referred to the close atmosphere of the schoolrooms and their detrimental effect on the children.
Miss McLay. W.C.T.U. organiser for the Dominion, gave a most inspiring address and urged the women to consecrate their lives and service to the cause of Prohibition, and to make their Christian principles felt in the moral and social uplift of humanity. Mr. White. Alliance organiser, made an appeal for helpers in the campaign, and outlined the work proposed to be carried out. The work of the "cradle roll" in reaching the children in early years was stressed. Mrs. Raw was appointed superintendent of this department of work.
