NEW TYPE OF CARBURETTOR.
IRIS DIAPHRAGM,
A simple carburettor has recently appeared 011 several makes of.car which has particular advantages of its own. It starts the engine very easily, whatever the temperature, owing to its being provided with an iris diaphragm instead of the ordinary type throttle. No doubt photograpliers will recognise this form of shutter better than the average motorist, as the iris diaphragm is in common use on cameras, usually as a stop. Also it has a single jet, which compensates itself without any complications; it is easy to get at if it does get choked, and is simple to regulate. Once regulated, its lasts, unless the owner changes the type of fuel, such as going from benzol to ethyl petrol or fuel oil to ordinary petrol. In such cases one simply changes the one jet to suit the fuel, so the car can be driven on paraffin or even on whisky. But don't let me be misunderstood when I mention whisky, as men who have driven cars on it have ended in gaol before now—but then it was not in the carburettor.
