INDUSTRIAL PEACE.

Labour Extremists Attempt To Cause Rift. T.U.C. TO CARRY ON. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) LONDON, June 27. The meeting of the council of the Trades Union Congress to discuss the interim report of the delegates to the Mond Conference for industrial peace, lasted four hours. An attempt was led by Mr. George Hicks, ex-chairman, and Mr. A. J. Cook, general secretary of the Miners' Federation, to force the council to discontinue the investigation of industrial peace possibilities with the employers' group. Their motion to that effect was defeated by 15 vote*, to 6. Messrs. Hicks and Cook urged that the discussions had reached their limit of usefulness. The meeting also discussed a proposal to establish national conciliation machinery to which a confederation of the employers' organisations and the British Industries Federation would be asked to subscribe. This matter will be reviewed by the joint conference on July 4. The intention is that this machinery should be entirely voluntary and without the element of'compulsion.
