AUCKLAND TROTS.

IN RAIN AND SLUSH.

WRETCHED DAY AT EPSOM.

WINTER MEETING CONCLUDED.

W ay back in 1916, when Admiral Wood won the Auckland Trotting Cup, the weather was so bad that after the Cup was run it was decided to postpone the remaining events on the programme till the following day. At that time the race track at Alexandra Park was a dirt one, and it was quite impossible, with the track a mass of slush, to proceed. Yesterday was on a par, and no crowd of racegoers ever saw racing under more unpleasant weather and track conditions. From early morning steady rain fell, with never a let up, and horses and drivers were covered with mud race after race, and they were to be sympathised with. Naturally the attendance was small and betting cramped, and at the end» of the day it was found that the tote turnover was £24,862, against £44,321 10/ on the second day of the winter meeting twelve months ago. For the meeting the sum of £65,»f>6 10/ was registered, against £89,890 10/ last vear, a decrease of £23,934. The Big Trot. Kempton, Peter Swift and Waikaha were not paraded for the Members' Handicap. "\oung Blake was favourite, being backed to the extent of £859, while Rose Bingen ( £750) and Tamerlane ( £480) were next in request. Ileal the Great, The Tartar and Great Change all broke in the early stages, Great Change being pulled up. Passing the stands, Tiger Salve, Tamerlane, Tradesman and Rose Bingen were the leaders and there was little between this quartet. When they came round again Rose Bingen and Tamerlane were together, followed by Tiger Salve, Tradesman. Reail the Great and Young Blake, the last-named breaking. Along the back Rose Bingen and Tamerlane were about twenty lengths in front of the others, and they fought out the finish. Rose Bingen getting the verdict by two lengths from Tamerlane, who l>eat Young Blake by six lengths. Real the Great was fourth, with The Tartar and Salve next. A Big Field. The scratching pen was used pretty freely in the Liverpool Handicap, Cute Lad. Dad's Hope. Master Councillor, Moko Chief, Napland, Neerson, Pitaroa. Lingfield, 'i oung Blake, Tamerlane, and Native Prince declining their engagements. The bracket, Dillon Huon. Free Advice, and Parkwood was the public fancy, carrying £(H)9, with Pageant ( £439) and Daytime ( £397) next in order of selection. Haerangi Pai did not leave the mark. Hohoro and Mars were the quickest away, but Mars soon ran to the front and established a good lead, showing the way past the stands to Dillon Huon, Hohoro, Daytime and Pageant, the field being strung out. Along the back Mars dropped out, and Dillon Huon ran to the front attended by Daytime, Pageant and Hohoro. Cross- j ing the top Dillon Huon cleared right j away and won by five lengths from Daytime, who beat Pageant by three lengths and a-half. Then came Harvest Child. Hughie Wallace, Gold Dial and Loch Moigh. Won by a Nose. Backers made their last visit to the front of the machine to endeavour to pick the Au Revoir Handicap, and the bracketed trio (Tom Thumb, Talaro, and Logan Chief) found most favour, but there was plenty of backing for Cardinal Logan and some for Dalmeny. Talent was the early leader from Tom Thumb and All Bell, the latter going badly, and soon he made a bad break which sent him back last. Talent ploughed along through the slush in front with Tom Thumb and Cardinal Logan handy, and this Was the order as they turned for home. In the run to the jtidge Talent looked like seeing it out, but Cardinal Logan gradually wore him down and got the decision by a nose. Imprint, who was very slow to get up speed, was five lengths away third with Tom Thumb and Jewel Pointer following. Henry Logan was early hoisted as a starter, but he did not take his place with the field and the £191 invested on him was returned to his supporters.
