FATALLY BURNED.
YOUNG MOTOR CYCLIST.
COLLIDED WITH TRUCK.
PETROL TANK BURST.
(By Telegraph.—Owa Correspondent.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Monday.
George Jonathan Pine, aged 19, a son of Mr. G. J. Pine, a well-known trainer, of Sockburn, was riding his motor cycle along the Main South Road at about eight o'clock this morning, proceeding in the direction of Christchurch, and when near the Riccarton School he crashed into a motor truck. The petrol tank of the cycle burst and Pine, his motor cycle and the truck caught fire.
Pine, a mass of flame, was dragged off] the bonnet of the blazing truck. He died in the Christchurch Hospital about noon.
At the time of the accident Pine was travelling at a fairly high speed along the bitumenised portion of the roadway, and the sun was shining directly into his eyes. The truck was being driven out of the yard of Mr. W. J. Bowman, engineer, by an employee, R. Giles, and had reached the centre of the roadway when the crash occurred. Pine was hurled against the truck, and his body] became wedged in between the crumpled wing «i"» bonnet. Simultaneously the petrol spurted from the motor cycle j tank, and in a flash the cyclc, Pine and the truck bonnet were enveloped in flame and smoke. . _ Four or five men rushed from Bowman's yard and extricated Pine at great risk to themselves, but his case was hopeless.
