NOTES FROM THE WAIKATO.

CANDIDATES FOR ELLERSLIE. ] C. J. Carmont, sen., who lias been located as a trainer at Te Aroha, has shifted his headquarters to Matamata, and Unoco, Gold Rain and Taurimu are 1 among the members of his team. i Macroom and Paganelli, who have 1 been spelling in the Taranaki district, • were brought back to M. J. Carroll's ' stables a few days ago. These candi- ' dates look well after their respite. Town Bird will keep his engagements in the sprint events at the Te Kuiti ; meeting. This member of George Reid's ' team at Te Aroha has not been in work [ very long, and for that reason the Archiestown—Lady Birdwood gelding is ' not likely to be at his best at his first appearance since re-entering the scene. Pouri has had an occasional schooling over a few brush hurdles since his return to Te Rapa from the Auckland meeting. The Spalpeen gelding has had plenty of other useful work, and will be a fit horse when raced at the Te Kuiti meeting. This will be the only member of J. F.* Tutchen's team participating in events at the coming fixtui*. Stormy went lame during the racing at the Auckland winter meeting, and the son of Quin Abbey and Gipsy Martian has been off the training scene since. The trouble is in one of his feet, and it may be some time before he will be fit to race. This is ill-luck for his Hamilton owner, as Stormy was well advanced in racing condition, and a success for him appeared on the cards at any time. ■ Athenrv is to form one of M. J. Carroll's team for the" Te Kuiti meeting. The Mullingar chestnut has not done any racing of recent times, but he has had a steady measure of work at Te Rfepa. It is very likely, however, that Athenry will require some racing before he reaches his best. Queen Arch will have many friends in the chief distance events she will participate in at Ellerslie next week-end. The success of the Marble Arch mare against a useful field in the Cornwall Handicap warrants taking notice of. The point has to be allowed, however, that the scale of weights will be higher fn the coming occasion than they were at the Auckland winter meeting, and Queen Arch is not built on weight-carrying lines. Against this is the fact that the Te Aroha-owned galloper has never been in better condition for racing, according to the latest track work she has been getting through. Wiltshire is being kept in work at Te Rapa with a view to being raced over country on the concluding day of the Te Kuiti meeting. R. Svme has the Day Comet-Lady Lobelia gelding looking well, and he should give a good account of himself in the trip "over the hill" at Ellerslie. Prodice has been brought in again, and is to be got ready by F. E. Loo rub at Te Awamutu for the early racing of the new season. The daughter of Catmint and Hyades will most likely tackle the Guineas engagement at Avondale in the spring. Prodice first displayed her ability at that period of the year during this, her first season of racing. * King Lu continues to go on improvins as the result of the work he has been getting through at Te Aroha. The Lucullus horse will race at the Te Kuiti meeting, and is also freely engaged at the Wellington meeting at Trentham next month. The increased scale of weights will suit Kin? Lu better than several of the opponents he will meet at Ellerslie next week-end. Mangani is to be sent north from Te Awamutu to contest jumping events at the Te Kuiti meeting. The Day Comet gelding has been working well at his home centre, and so far as condition is concerned, will be well prepare for the duty ahead. Mangani has been somewhat uncertain in his jumping at his latest appearances in public, but with everything being favourable in that connection he should have reasonable prospects at his next appearance at Ellerslie. Hangawera. is amonsr the regular workers at Te Rapa. The Chesterfield gelding is to fulfil jumping events at the Te Kuiti meeting. Hangawera hardly appears ready to display his best as vet.
