The moat disastrous goods trains accident in the history of the New Zealand railway, occurred between Paerata and Pukekohe this mormng, when no less than 35 wagons were piled up on an embankment, apparently in consequence of a truck being derailed by a mishap to its under gear. There were eight fully.laden wagons of cattle in the train, and 16 truck loads of coal. The vehicles were piled up in a heap of great confusion, m which the majority of the unfortunate animals were lulled outright or sustained such injuries that they had to be destroyed. The top picture shows a section of the wreckage, while below bullocks which escaped injury are seen on the edge of the wreckage.
