BANK SHARES POPULAR. SOME ADVANCES RECORDED. Business has been satisfactory on 'Change during the past week as far as investment stocks are concerned, but mining shares are having few inquiries with the exception of Waihis, in which line a fair number of sales were made at 11/6, after which an extra penny was offered, but sellers asked 10/8. Ohinemuri Mines sold at 6/10 and 7/, at which rate there was further demand. Sales occurred of Mount Lyells at £1 13/8 and £1 13/9, and of Mahakipawas at 2/. Union Bank of Australia shares moved up this week, sales being made at £14 18/6 to £14 19/6 yesterday afternoon. Bank of Australasia shares also improved, salqs being made at £14 14/. A rise took place in Bank of New South Wales shares. Early in the week transactions took place at £48 10/. On Thursday afternoon £48 15/ was paid, and at the last call yesterday sales were reported at £49 5/. English and Scottish Bank shares could be placed at £8 12/, which marks a slight advance. National Bank of Australasia shares also firmed, buyers offering £18 4/. which brought in a seller at £18 12/. The contributing issue had inquiry at £8 19/ yesterday. Bank of New Zealand shares sold agiin up to £3 0/9. Bank of Adelaide shares are wanted at £9 8/. Shares in what may be ternied agricultural companies seem to be having more attention. Farmers' Fertiliser shares sold at £4 8/ yesterday afternoon. Gear Meat, Ltd., had business at £1 18/3 and £1 18/6, and £4 5/ was paid for preference shares in Abraham Williams, Ltd. Buyers of New Zealand Refrigerating (ordinaryissue) offered 17/2 at the last call yesterday. and for the contributing shares 8/5 could be got. Farmers' Auctioneering ordinary shares are wanted at £'2 10 / and £2 10/3 is quoted by buyers of Goldsbrough, Mort. Ltd. Inquiry has also set in for A preference North Auckland Farmers' shares at 10/, and at 8/1 for B preference, a rise of one shilling in the latter case. Newton King preference issue were placed at 12/. and buyers still offer £105 for N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency ordinary stock. A sale took place this week in Wright, Stephenson ordinary stock at £1 If.
Both Fuller's and Hayward's Pictures had business this week at £1 1/. Wilsons Cement sold at £1 18/ prior to the dividend being paid and at £1 16/ since the annual meeting. Sales were made yesterday afternoon of Huddart-Parker Steam at £2 8/, and during the week 14/9 was accepted for Northern Steam shares. Several sales were made of Morris, Hedstrom, Ltd., at £1 1/, and British Tobacco changed hands at £2 2/6. Coal shares continue in good demand, but the only sale recorded this week was in Westport Stockton (ordinary issue), for which 3/ was paid. Auckland Gas shares had business at £1 3/4, and L.O'B. Timber at £1 14/. Devonport Ferry shares had several sales prior to the payment of the dividend at £1 5/. A little business was done in breweryshares this week. Crowns sold at 10/ and Staples at £1 16/, while for C. L. Innes and Co, ordinary issue, 16/6 was paid. N.Z. Breweries had fair eales at £2 1/3 and £2 1/6, and the debentures were placed yesterday afternoon at £1 2/9 and £1 2/10. Although there has been steady demand for a number of loans and debentures the prices offered did not lead to business, with the exception that Government OV2 per cent Loan, Inscribed, 1936, sold at t £100 7/6. Sellers came in of Government 6 per cent Loan, 1951. at £105, but buyers | only offered £101. Auckland City 5% per cent debentures. 1960, could be got for £99 17/6, but sellers offered a pound under par.
