RAILWAY EARNINGS.
WORKING PROFIT IN APRIL. RECEIPTS LESS THAN LAST YEAR. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. A working profit of £130.222 is shown by the Railway Department's working account for the first period of the new financial year, from April 1 to 28. The corresponding return last year, covering 30 days, showed a working profit of £160,263. The Easter holidays fell in the April period in both years. The gross earnings were £642,803 and the expenses £512,581. The former shows a decline of £44,600, while the latter are less by £14,559.
The working profit from the North Island railways wa« £71.260, a decrease of £15,322; and that from the South Island railways £34,772, a decrease of £17,206. Net revenue from miscellaneous services, £24,190, has increased by £2487.
