NEW YORK SCANDAL.
Grand Larceny Of State Census Funds. MRS. KNAPP CONVICTED. (Australian and X.Z. Press Association.) (Received 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 27. ilrs. Florence Knapp, formerly Secretary of State for New York, under the administration of Mr. A 1 Smith, the present Governor, was convicted in the first degree of grand larceny of the State census funds. The maximum penalty is ten years in prison. The imposition of sentence will probably occur next week. It was reported from Albany, New York State, in January last, that the most serious charges of malfeasance in office to be made against a woman since power to hold office had been granted
to women in America •were lodged against Mrs. Florence Knapp, dean of the College of Home Economics of Syracuse University, and former Secretary to tlie State of New York. The commissioner who investigated the charges recommended that she be criminally prosecuted. He alleged
that she had illegally disbursed £23,600, and wasted nearly £16,000 in her administration of the census funds. The charges included nepotism (favouring relatives) and the giving away of State funds, which ultimately were traced back as having been in her possession.
