Schoolboy Wins Great American Marathon. PRIZE OF £5000. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 27. Andrew Payne Claremore, an Oklahoma schoolboy, is the winner of the 3450 miles trans-conTinental foot race from Los Angeles to New York. He ran the distance in 573h 4m in 85 laps, and will receive £5000 as first prize on Friday. This race was organised by Mr. C. C. Pyle, who is noted as the organiser of the international professional lawn tennis scheme, which took Suzanne Lenglen from the amateur ranks at the height of her fame. Thousands of runners of all nationalities started in the trans-contin-ental race, including Arthur Newton, the South African long distance champion. This is the longest race in history, and occupied just under 24 days. Apparently the winner mapped each day of 24 hours into four laps, decreasing the rest intervals towards the finish. According to the fieriires given the winner's average pace over the journey was just over six miles per hour. In 1893 an American longdistance walker, E. P. Weston, did the journey from New York to San Francisco, approximately 3895 miles, in 104 days 7 hours. The walking record for one hour is miles.
