HOCKEY.
ST. LUKE'S DEFEATED. SURPRISE BY NORTH SHORE. SOMERVILLE PRESSED. The first round, of championship matches was completed at the Remuera hockey grounds on Saturday. The grounds played well until steady rain set in, when the surface became slippery, and players found a difficulty to maintain a foothold.
A great surprise was brought off by North Shore defeating St. Luke's by two goals to one, and this has the result of again placing Somerville in the lead for the championship. Somerville overcame Mount Eden by three goals to two, and the game was remarkable for Mount Eden's great effort in the closing stages.
University, in a poor game with Areta, emerged victorious by five goals to three.
SHORE'S SURPRISE,
North Shore sprang a surprise by registering their first win in the senior competition against the club leaders, St. Luke's. Even when Shore pressed at the outset and Lucas goaled from a corner hit it wah not suspected that the leaders would go down. But when Anthony netted Shore's second goal from a penalty there was uneasiness among St. Luke's followers. J. Giles notched a score for St. Luke's before the interval and the second half was entered on with Shore one up. Shortly after resumption, Kelly put a shot into the net, but was offside. Persistent attacks by St. Luke's failed to get through and the game ended : North Shore ................ 2 St. Luke's 1
SOMERVILLE PRESSED.
Somerville started the game against Mt. Eden In impressive style, and were two goals up at h&lf-tlmS, both of them having been pat through by C. Watts. Well on In the second half E. Watts added another to Somerville's tally, and then Mt. Eden made a great finish of it. In quick order goals were put on by Chiplin and Fletcher, and Somerville were being hard pressed when the final whistle sounded with the score: Somerville ................. 3 Mt. Eden .................. 2
HIGH SCORING.
In a high scoring match University had the upperhand of Areta all through and Hamilton, Seelen and Philpott put shots into the net in the first half for Varsity, while Brideson got one through for Areta. In the second half the scoring was evenly distributed, Seelen and Philpott for Varsity and Ashley and Carter for Areta putting the finishing touches to successful scoring movements. Bell (2), and Teague scored for the winners, and Kelly, Best and Weldon or Nelson. It was a fast and interesting game. DUNEDIX.
