Valkon appeared to have a chance in the Cornwall Handicap with 9.8 after his recent form,. hut he was not paid up for.
Vexatious did not run well at Wanganui, and she will have to do a lot better to have a chance at Eilerslie. She has been paid up for in the Great Northern Hurdles, but fell when schooling this morning.
Te Kara finished fourth in the Cornwall and York Handicaps at the last Great Northern meeting, and lip has been accepted for in the Cornwall Handicap on Saturday next, ff he is as well as he was last year lie will take some beating for he orfly has to carry 9.12 as against 10.6.
Excellent acceptances were received by the Auckland Racing Club for the first day of their winter meeting next Saturday, while there is also a good field engaged in the Great Northern Steeplechase to be run on the second day. The Jervois Handicap, has attracted thirty-seven and in consequence a division will have to be made in that event. 1
Mount Marta has been accepted for in the Penrose' Hurdles at Ellerslie next Saturday. He won the May Hurdles, one mile and three-quarters, in most convincing style at Wanganui last week, and on that performance will have some friends next Saturday. Last season he ran well for a good wtiy in the Great Northern Hurdle Race. »
About twelve months ago J. Thorpe had Cliamour and Lomint in the Cornwall Handicap, and the former, who was thought to be the better of the pair, unfortunately broke a leg while training at Ellerslie. However, his full sistej Lomint, carried off the event, and she is engaged again in the Cornwall Handicap next Saturday. Lomint is coming along well and may give a good account of herself.
Ajt the Auckland winter meeting 12 months ago Tinokoa put up one of his best performances when he scored in the King George Handicap, in which race he defeated a number of good performers. He has not been a great success since then, although lie finished third in the Flying Handicap at the Waikato meeting last month and his turn for a win may not be far off. Tinokoa is quite at home on a soft track and is a horse likely to perform well at Ellerslie next month.
Perle de Leon has been paid up for in both the chief jumping events at Ellerslie. He was third in the Winter Hurdles, two miles and a-quarter, at tiie Wellington winter meeting last season, and th's season, prior to the Wanganui meeting, performed well on the Mat. He had his first race over hurdles for some considerable time in the May Hurdles at Wanganui, but did not impress. However, in the Century Hurdles on the second day he ran a great race, being beaten by Red Fuchsia by a very narrow margin. 011 that showing he will have to be considered in tie Great Northern Hurdles.
Pouri has been paid up for in both the Great Northern Hurdles and Steeples. At the Manawatu meeting at Christmas time Pouri won the Tokomaru Hurdles, one mile and threequarters, with 11.2. He was not started again till the Wanganui meeting last week when he ran third iu the May Hurdles and fourth in the Century Hurdles. Ho can jump well, and appeared in hie races at Wanganpi as though he will stay on. He certainly cannot be ruled out of the big event next Saturday. As to his ability over the big fences* nothing is known, and one would prefer to see lijm in a crosscountry eveut before auppo-tirg him.
Kilburn, who has arrived fit Eilerslie to fulfil liis engagements in hurdle races, | is. a solid-looking customer that should j carry weight well. He is to be r;:7ilci; | by J. Proctor at the Northern meeting
It is just possible that Good As Gold, who has been shipped to Australia, wii l be raced at some or the pony meetingaround Sydney, The daughter of Paper Money has proved herself a good sprinter and should cio v.i\l over tnc other side.
When scliuolwl at El'erslie on Thursday Lord Britce gave a good exhibition' of juuiping over a round of the steeplechase . coui'iat. He tired toward the iinisn diul doe,s hot appear to stay on too well, and may iind two and a-half miles over country a bit beyond him.
After her good effort in the Linley Handicap at Te Kapa, when slie ran second to Respirator, Speechless is likely to snow up in hack races during the approaching meeting at Eilerslie. She is now trained by A. took, at Te Awainutu, who can be relied on to produce her in the best of condition.
J. Anderton has Royal Ti:ok in nice order to race at the Jujic meeting, while his track work also'shows a goul deal of improvement. Royal Trek has recently been given a few schooling lessons over the big fences at Eilerslie and with a little more experience is likely to develop into a useful jumper. 4
Taurimu, who has had several defeats registered against him since he scored in the Pukekawa Handicap at the Franklin meeting in March, is well engaged in hack races at Eilerslie next month. His form this season has not been above the ordinary for he has only won twice in 16 starts.
Although Thursby has not been up any great length of time R. E. Brown has the Tliurnhain gelding looking really well. This horse handles the heavy going in great style'and it would not surprise to iind liim racing prominently during the coming meeting at Eilerslie.
In his two starts at the Waikuto meeting Stormy failed to get in the money, although he ran a fair rac when he finished fourth in the Te Rapa Handicap on the concluding day of tha;, fixture. Stormy is due to make his next appearance in the Cornwall Handicap, but will require to improve to have any chance In that event.
Desert Glow, vvlio has not yet been tried over hurdles in public, was a strong tip in the city during the week for the Great Northern Hurdle Race, but he has not been paid up for. He is good on the Hat, and looks the type to make a good hurdler, but one would like to seo him in action in a hurdle race before assessing his chances in such an important event.
When Ripon Abbey finished iserond to Lady Cintra in the* Trial Hurdle race at Eilerslie in the autumn he showed considerable promise, but he has not so far displayed any improvement in his subsequent races. The Cambridgeowned. gelding will be seen in action again during the coming meeting at Ellemlie, where he wili be afforded further opportunity to gain distinction over hurdles.
Respirator continues to hit out verv freely in his training work at Eilerslie and J. Buchanan must be given credit for having the big Tea Tray gelding in such solid condition. Respirator, who has not been by any means an easy horse to train, never looked better than he does at the present time and if he fails to race prominently during the Auckland winter meeting it will not be for lack of condition.
Comical was allowed to djop out of the Great Northern Hurdles, bur. remains in the Great Northern Steeplechase. This gelding is a pretty good hurdler, and seeing he won the* Grand National Hurdles in 1920 with 11.4 he appeared to have a chance in the Great Northern Hurdles with 11.8. He has only once completed a steeplechase course a4id that was at Wangnnui last week. Tn the Great Northern Steeplechase he has been awarded and he went well over the big country this morning.
Wedding March won the Great Northern Hqrdles last year with J0.3, and was well fancied for the Great Northern Steeplechase, but owing to the Mernsahib incident* he was not allowed to start* in the Great Northern Steeples, and thus lost an opportunity of doing the same as El Gallo (twice), Lochella, Sir Roseberv and Liberator had' done. However, Wedding March showed at the Auckland summer meeting' wnd also at the autumn meeting that he was a great hurdler, for at the former fixture he won the Auckland Hurdle Race with 11.7, and at the latter meeting captured the Brighton Hurdle Race with 11.8. Wedding March will be well fancied next' Saturday.
AY edding March, Archibald, Brigadier Bill, Perle De Leon, Pouri, Royalform, Beau Cavalier and Maunga have each been paid up for in the Great Northern Hurdle Race and the Great Northern Steeplechase. El Ga.llp won the double in 1910 and JO, while Sir Rosebery won tlft Steeplechase in 1024 and annexed the double in the following year. Liberator (1 R9i>) and Lochella in 1920 also captured both rr.ces in the same year.
Town Bank, who was recently purchased by Mr. J. M. t Samson, was nominated for the Great Northern Hurdle Rice and the Cornwall Handicap at nierslio next Saturday, but he has been allowed to drop out of the pimping event. Jll the Cornwall Handicap, with N.O. be will have some friends, for he has good credentials up to a mile and abalf. and since he resumed racing recently lie has been placed 011 five occas»(;ns. At the Auckland autumn meeting be was third in the President's Handicap, one mile and a-(|iiarter, and the next day was second in the Autumn lTaiini<j>, one mile and a-half, to Mask. '1 own Hank finished thii'd in the Foley Memorial, one mile and a-quarter. at the A you dale meeting, second in the Rangiriri Highwei«lit Handicap, one mile, - t the Waikato meeting, and third in the Mcßae Memorial Handicap, one mile and a-quarter, at the Einuoiit meet in«.
NOT A PROGRAMME
(By Telegraph.—l'ress Association.)
DUNEDIN, Friday. . A charge against Francis Joseph Hay ward of having published and cireulateu on May 4 a document, the Southern £ porting Guide, purporting to be a programme of the trotting events at Forbury Park on May 5, was to-day dismissed by Mr. H. VV. Bundle, S.M." The magistrate held that the inclusion of a list of acceptances did not make the document a programme. If the document purported to be anything it was to give information to the gullibie public.
