EASTERLY GALE.
SMALL SHIPPING BUFFETED. ISTHMUS SWEPT BY SQUALLS. Small craft kept close to home this morning when an easterly gale brought up a lieavy sea out beyond. Rangitoto. From a fresh wind at midrtight there was a steady increase to a. gale, and the isthmus was swept by squalls, with, a threatening sky. By mid-day the opinion on the waterfront was that the worst of the blow was over, and rain was 'expected as soon as it moderated. In the harbour a choppy sea tossed small shipping about. It was thought advisable not to berth the steamer Scheldepas this morning at the berth allotted to her at the Central wharf, and she remained whe?e she had anchored in the stream upon arrival last evening with a full cargo of basic slag. The ferry steamer Toroa had a rudder pin bent by a heavy sea, and was to-day undergoing repairs at the Queen's wharf. Pleasure craft in thelx>at harbour at St. Mary's Bay, though in no danger, were being freely tossed about, and off Judge's Bay a launch got adrift from its moorings. Rainfall in the night amounted to only .04in, bringing the total for the month to 7.f>sin, which is 3in above the May average.
