ALLEGED MALPRACTICE.
FEDERAL TAX DEPARTMENT. SYDNEY, May 24. The New South Wales Taxation Commissioner, Mr. Whiddon, in a report to the Assistant Treasurer, makes a startling charge concerning the condition of affairs which prevailed when the Federal and State taxation Departments were merged. Mr. Whiddon says the Federal Department was "topsy-turvy" and there was unmistakable evidence of malpractice.
The commissioner also asserts that following upon retrenchments sabotage was employed to destroy portions of a recommendation regarding a refund which he had suggested should be suspended. When he saw the papers again his minute to that effect had been deleted by means of some chemical process.
