president of various sporting clubs affiliated to the Leys Institute. At the first conference of the Municipal Libraries Association Dr. Leys was elected president, in recognition of his active interest in library work.
Working assiduously in the quiet of his study in the hours which followed the rush of the newspaper day, Dr. Leys undertook the preparation of an "Early History of New Zealand," which was published by Sir Henry Brett, and which is regarded as the best record of the colony from the earliest times to the year 1845. He also compiled "The Colonists' Guide," first published in 1883. His description of the Tarawera eruption, published in book form, is still recognised as the best descriptive account of that occurrence. These and other publications will long be reminders of one who in. his sturdy patriotism gave unspar ingly of his time and talents. Throughout his eventful career Dr. Leys was a great journalist, a great citizen, and a great friend.
