TROTTING.
WHEEL AND TRA6K NOTES. (By ORION.) FIXTURES. June 2, 4.—Canterbury Park T.C. June 9.—Ashburton T.C. June 23. 27.—Auckland T.C. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. "DOPE." —Toll Chimes did not start at the last Wanganui Trotting Club's meeting. Acceptances for the Ilawke's Bay Troting Club's meeting close on Monday next. An appeal lias been lodged against the Trotting Association's decision in the John Dee case. The Canterbury Park Trotting Club's meeting will be advanced another stage on Tuesday, when acceptances for the opening day's programme close. R. B. Berry is a, clever reinsmun. but in the Stewards' Handicap at Oaniaru lie drove Great Triumph a peculiar race, and frequently changed his lire of running, allowing him to lie blocked in oil the rails when it would have been better policy to keep to "the open road," says a C'hristchurch writer. The three-year-old colt is a fine pacer, and should develop into a good winner. SELECT TROTTERS. In tightening the class in the Dominion Trotters' Handicap, the star turn for square-gaiters at the big spring carnival, from 4.38 to 4.34, the Metropolitan Trotting Club committee has given very pointed evidence that only the very l»est horses are desired in that particular race. It may be thought that with such a tight limit the entry list would be small, but we may take it that the committee did not make such a drastic cut without having a good idea of how many horses would be eligible. The race will not come up for decision till November next, and in the meantime there will be plenty of opportunities for horses to qualify, but even at present a dozen can be mentioned who are entitled to be in, and they make a choice lot. . They are:—Peterwali, Peter Swift, Trampfast, Moneyspider, Kscapade, Judge Hancock. Young Blake, Elzear. Native Star. Waikaha, Sister Beatrice? John Mauritius. AN EMBRYO CHAMPION.
Since J. Bryce came to this country from Scotland he has handled many good horses, but, unless the writer is very much mistaken, he has seldom harnessed up a more promising youngster than Grand Light, who finished second to Return Voyage in the Advance Handicap at Oamaru on Saturday, writes "Sen-j tinel," in the "Otago Witness." Grand Light is a shapely two-year-old colt by! Matchliglit from Our Aggie, the mare who put Bryce on the map so far as trotting in the Dominion is concerned, and the race on Saturday served to demonstrate that his heart is in the right place. Throughout the running Bryce kept him awav from the rails, and at one stage of the race lie was surreunded by horses, but apart from an occasional nod of the head which usually pre'sages a break, and which was based on keenness to step a bit faster, he paced a nicc even race, and without being knocked about he finished as well as anything else in the race. Altogether, it was a most impressive performance. and the indications arc that Grand Light will eventually step his way into the tightest classes. At present his near hind cannon carries evidence of recent trouble.
