Good ns Gold and Royal Head have been shipped to Sydney.
linasay's two-year-old sister is said to be going uloiig nicely in her tiack efforts at Hasting.-!. *
Aston, who won at the recent Avondale meeting, was operated on for wind trouble last week. He is a good class horse and should do well if the operation is a success.
The work at Ellerslie on Saturday in irning should be most interesting, for among others who will be seen out over the big fences are Maunga, Glendowie, Comical and Tuki.
Marble Mount finished in front of Ceyxprlund, Miss Alma.and Quincoma at Ellerslie yenterday in a 'bout over four hurdles. He jumped well throughout iiiid looks as though he will do well in this department.
T?nliopoto again jumped the big fences «t Klleralic yesterday and gave a good display. He cut himself a bit at the stonewall, the last obstacle tq be negotiated, and it is to bg hoped that it is not at all serious, for he is a most promising 'chaser.
Segment, \«ho won at the Egmont meeting, appears to bo greatly improved as the result of the racing he had there. He does not like the right-handed going and that was the reason his owner took him south. Segment went well over seven furlongs at Ellerslie yesterday.
Geyscrland is a good type, of hunter and he went nicely in a schooling task over fotir hurdles on the course proper at Ellerslie yesterday in company with Marble Mount, Miss Alma and Quinconia. Geyserland may give a good account of himself during the Great Northern meeting.
Lomint won the Cornwall Handicap at the Great Northern meeting last year, and though she has only had one race recently she is coming on nicely at Ellerslie and it should not be long before she is at her best. She went pleasingly over six furlongs in company with Sir Archie yesterday.
Aberfeldy was given a run over hurdles at Ellerslie yesterday morning in company with Archibald. Hie is not nearly as quick a fencer as Archibald and lost ground at the hurdles. ,At the finish Abei'feldy was well beaten, but there is still time for him to improve considerably. He looks well.
Kick Off in to be placed in work agaiii and is to be put to hurdling. Some seasons ago Kick Off was a good horse, and as a three-year-old won the New Zealand St. Leger Stakes, while he was beaten in the Trentham Gold Cnp by Amythas and in the Great Northern St. Leger by Royal Box. As a four-year-old ho accounted for the Taranaki Cup.
Perlo do Leon was given a run over the big fences at Ellerslie yesterday in company with Rahcpoto. This is the first time ho has been put over the steeples here and he has yet to make his appearance in public over big fences. On yesterday's exhibition, he should do well in this department of the game, for he jumped well and stayed on well. '
Comical appears to be in good' condition and went well over A round of No. 1 grass track yesterday morning. He completed the Wanganui steeplechase course, when he was ridden by the amateur, Mr. R. Russell, and in consequence ho may do better over the big fences in future. There is no doubt about his r? C v„ V s to go over the bi K fences at JMlersliu to-morrow morning.
Pornpcius gave a good exhibition of Jumping the big fences at Ellerslie yesterday. He started out with Fiery Lad, Lord Bnice and Kamehameha, but Fiery Lad lost his rider at the first fence of the double and Kamehameha baulked at the first fence on top of the hill. Pompeius then joined Lord Bruce and beat him over the remaining jumps. It was a most pleasing effort for a beginner. Pompieus is engaged in hunters' events at the Great Northern meeting.
Billy Boy, who raccs in the same colours as Glendowie, was put over the hurdles in the centre at Ellerslie yesterday morning, and after baulking at the first he jumped the obstacles well, it appeared as though he did not have sufficient run up when first tried and that was why he stopp<yl. Billy Boy has, only started once, and that was at the last To Awamutu meeting, when he ran unplaced ; fo the Waipa Plate. He is a fully-quaflfled hunter and is engaged in the Hunt Club Hurdles at the Great Northern meeting.
Royalform, who, ha* been off the scene since the last Grand National meeting owing to goingamiss after the Jumpers' Flat Race, and Zircon, who has only had a couple of races since the same fixture, where,he fell in the Lincoln Steeplechase, were produced at EUerslie yesterday and set out over Ave hurdles on the course proper. They raced together till the last fence, where Zircon, slipped on landing. However, up to that point, Royalform appeared to be doing the better. He seemed to be the quicker at his jumps. Last sea Hoi? both these horses performed well. Royalform won the Brighton Hurdles at EUerslie, and after nuking, a good showing in the Great' Northern Hurdle Race won the Campbell Hurdle Zircon , annexed the Tamaki on the same day. Going i n ""Nington, Royalform was second cliff# »^ re s s ttam Hurdles to WharnhaVf a v—•-»* —" only beaten by in the J»ly Steeplewon. Comical, it is stated, will not be a starter in the Great Northern Hurdle Race. Mister Gamp, Brigadier Bill and Geyserland are three of A. McDonald's mounts at the Great Northern meeting. \ exatious and Mister Gamp arrived from the South at Ellerslie this morning in charge of their trainer, J. P. Coyle. Patuki, Good Sport and Crishna are reported to be getting through their education as hurdlers at Hastings in good style. ° Elysianor has been sold to Mr. V. Edhouse, of Bulls, and he will in future be trained by J. P. Coyle, at Awapuni. Elysianor is a good hurdler. C. Regan has been engaged to ride Karamu, Lord Bruce, Maslioor and Rafferty at Ellerslie next month, and H. Dulieu will steer Dave, Betty Zane and Rafa.
Glendowie was given strong work over a round on the No. 1 grass track at Ellerslie yesterday morning and went particularly well. This promising crosscountry candidate is to be given a run oyer the steeplechase course to-morrow morning.
Trisco Jack was withdrawn from all engagements at the Great Northern meeting at's.ls p.m. yesterday. On his showing at Wanganui he had. little chance at Ellerslie, for he was so hopelessly tailed off in the Wanganui Steeplechase that he was pulled up.
A. E. Cox, with three horses, J. Hanks, with two, and G. Reid, with ,one, aTe expected to arrive at Ellerslie in the course of a few days* ■' » . Since going to Hastings Merry Damon bad his first run along the other morning. For a companion he had the two-year-old Gay Salute, who finished well in front. Gay Salute is most promising and present intentions arc to take the daughter of Lord Quex and Soot through to Otaki for maiden events. Tuki and Maunga were galloped together over a round on the No. 1 grass track at, headquarters yesterday morning. Both horses did their work well and are in first-class condition. They are to be indulged in a schooling task over the steeplechase country at Ellerslie on Saturday morning. Considering that Pekatahi was associated with that seasoned hurdler, Karamu, his display over- five hurdles on Thursday morniitg was a very satisfactory one. Karamu jumped up to bis best form and made the pace willing, still Pekatahi stuck to his task in good style and was close up to his opponent at the finish. J. Camniick, who has been riding with marked success during the present season, will ride Corinax, Thursby and Respirator on the first day of the Auckland winter meeting. Cammick is a vastly improved horseman and his riding has been very favourably commented on by both owners and trainers for some time past. In a schooling bout over five hurdles on the outside of the course proper at Ellerslie yesterday morning Archibald easily accounted fbr Aberfeldy, outjumping his Southern rival at every fence. From a time point of view the performance was good, and Archibald finished up his task very strongly, being a number of lengths clear of Aberfeldy at the end of tli6 bout.
Master Doon finished third in the Cornwall Handicap last season and won the York Handicap on the last day. Since then he has been given a course of hurdling, but he seems to still possess plenty of pace for he went nicely over a round, of No. 1 grass track at Ellerslie yesterday. Master Doon figures in the Cornwall Handicap at the minimum.
The aged Baldowa has been relegated to the paddock. Baldowa proved himself a good galloper, and among his victories were such important events as the Otago Handicap, St. Andrew's Handicap, Wairio Cup (two), Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap and the Thompson Handicap. Early in his career he became unsound ,and was thus prevented from showing .his best on toe race track. In all, Baldowa won 18 races, and was placed on numerous occasions. His total of stake-winnings was £5853.
For George who gained fame as the rider of the illustrious Gloaming, times have changed immensely, and these days he is seldom seen wearing silk (says an Australian writer). It b a remarkable state of -affairs when consideration is given to the great success which has attended his efforts, and to the fact that few -jockeys ride more work at Randwick on fast mornings. Young's one mpunt at Warwick Farm on May' 12 was on Fredwill, a heavilyHupported candidate for the Farm Stakes. Nineteen horses from the rails in a field of 21 proved too great a handicap for horse and rider and be finished third, ✓
