SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The Waitcmata Women's Progressive Leaguo was entertained bv its president, Dr. Wilkie, at her home in Bayswater, lust evening. The first part of the evening was devoted to business of the league. Dr. Wilkie announced that the first objective, to raise enough funds to secure the services of a Plunket nurse in the district, was accomplished! • nurse huving been installed in the hall at Belmdnt on Thursdays, and funds were m hand to pay tho year's salary. The next effort, Dr. Wilkie suggested, should bo a fund to help fit out children with defective eyesight in the two schools with glasses. It was also suggested to lier by » headmaster of one of the schools that a dental clinic for the North Shore should be established, and there again she suggested that they could help. Dr. Wilkie congratulated the league on having such a hard-working executive, und thanked them personally for the whole-hearted way in which they helped in any and every undertaking. It was unanimously carried that Lady Hunter, of Hawke's Bay, be elected patron of the league. The social programme, including recitations by Miss Verron, and' Betty Middleton, und two competitions were highly appreciated. A dainty supper was served.
A jolly party was given at the Click Clack Cabaret on Wednesday evening by Mrs. Wills McLaughlin, Puhinui, I'llpatoe toe, for her nieces, Miss Audrey Pcacocko and Miss Veronica Pabst. Coloured lights and streamers made gay decoration, and after supper, favours were distributed amongst the guests. Mrs. McLaughlin wore a frock of deep rose taffeta, with panel of geogette arid gold lace j Miss Audrey Peacocke was in blue taffeta with pink roses on skirt and Miss Veronica Pabst wore a frock of deep pink taffeta. Amongst those present were: Mrs. Pabst, wearing black marocain and lace; Miss Annotte George, palo lemon taffeta; Miss June Frater, rose pink georgette; Miss May Upton, powder blue taffeta; Miss Sheila Cameron, white lace and georgette; Miss Lois Mnhon, blue taffeta; Miss Mary Cruickshank, rose taffeta and gold lace; Miss More Vaile, pink taffeta and Bilver lace; Miss Kathleen Burleigh, pink georgette; Miss Una Collins, deep green panne velvet; Miss Bessie McCormick, blue taffeta and gold lace; Miss Enid Cuniining, apricot georgette; Miss Shirley Watkins, floral taffeta; Miss Lilian Pisacoeke, almond green taffeta; Miss Peter Gorrie, deep crcam taffeta; Miss Loutae de Boissiere, blue georgette embroidered with pink rosebuds. » * • •
A very pleasant afternoon in aid of the Hospital Auxiliary fund was given by Mrs. Harry Butcher at her beautiful now home, "Rockside," Gillies Avenue, on Tuesday afternoon. Tho Mayoress, Mrs. A. D. Campbell gave a very interesting address to the guests on the subject of the Hospital Auxiliary, and the excellent work carried out by that worthy organisation among the sick poor at this city. Mrs. Campbell said it was appalling the large number of sick people whohad practically no clothing, and it was* surprising tho number who were too proud to apply to the Charitable Aid Board for assistance; it was at this istnge where tho auxiliary stepped in and helped the needy over their sick times. Mrs. Campbell appealed to those who eould afford it to assist financially wherover possible, and assured them the object was a worthy one in providing warm and suitable clothing for those poor patients coming out of hospital who wero unable to provide for themselves. Afternoon tea was served In tho dining room, which was tastefully decorated, and was greatly admired by tho guests, the flowers, together with the soft lighting effect,, making a moat delightful setting. Bridge was played in the lounge and billiard room by quite a number of' the guests, who had a most pleasant time, and a very interesting gainu, the prize being won by Mrs. Coldicut. Mr. and Mrs. Fraser Smith gave a delightful "At Home" on Wednesday last at their residence in Shelly Beach Road. The function was promoted for the purpose of augmenting the funds of the Hospital Auxiliary. The hostess, Mrs. Fraser Smith, received her guests in a becoming gown of Oriental georgette. During the afternoon bridge was played, the prizes being won by Mesdames Crowe and Ballantyne and consolation prizes by Mesdames Clarke and Oswald. A sumptuous afternoon tea was provided by the hostess. On behalf of the committee, Mrs. Drysdale thanked Mr. and Mrs. Fraser Smith for their kindness and generosity in making available their beautiful residence for the occasion. Among the guests were Mesdames Maguire, Waters, Drysdale, ONeil, Keenan, Hazard, Norton, Heights, Evans, Nerheny, Bains, Wade, Clarke', Nelson Nixon, McGee, Evans, O'Brien, Gallagher, Cox, Webster, Graham, Nielson, Noton, Torrens, Fisher Hilton, Leonard, Fuller, Snedden, Hodge, Worsfold, Jackson, Blythe, McClay, Gordon, Jones, Moore, Misses Brown, Flynn, Wade, Burton, Moore.
