HEBREW MEMORIAL.
CEMETERY SITE TRANSFER.
COUNCIL ATTACHES CONDITION.
A decision that, if the proposed site for a Hebrew communal memorial hall in the Jewish Cemetery, Karangahape Road, is required by the City Council in the future 1 no compensation shall be paid except in respect of buildings, was made at the council meeting last evening.
In moving that the execution of the transfer of the site be deferred until the Hebrew congregation agreed that the land he transferred -subject to the condition that the council should have power to resume it on payment of compensation for the building only, Mr. Crookes said that the condition was necessary to protect the future rights of citizens, as the council would be in the position of having to pay probably an enhanced value.
Mr. E. J. Phelan said that the condition Was unreasonable, as the council had agreed to give the 'land if the Hehrew congregation obtained the necessary legislation to sanction it.
Mr. J. A. C. ..Hum suggested that, the motion should be amended to. provide that, if the land were re-transferred to the council, either' by negotiation or under the Public Works Act no allowance should be made for the value of the lands, exclusive of any buildings erected upon it.
Mr. J. Coyle said the effeet would be to make it possible for an agitation to bo started at ,any time .for the retransfer of the site, and tho position from the point of view of the would be somewhat insecure.
Mr. A. J. Entncan suggested that right of occupation should be given fo** a period of not lees than 66 years, thus giving a certain amount of permanency. Mr. E. E. Copsey said that the council should not "lu-dge about." It had agreed in September last to give the land, and he considered the condition unreasonable.
Tbe motion was carried
