SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A happy evening was spent by "The Philistines" on Saturday, when a mem-: bers' night was held. The occasion was •ne for the reunion of members and general rejoicing. There were no visitors present and after the election of officers for the,ensuing year, dancing was held. Supper concluded a very pleasant evening.

A bridge party was held at the home of the Misses Williams, in Takapuna, last Saturday evening as a farewell party for Miss Dorothy Williams, who, with her friend, Miss Buckby, is leaving to-day for a trip to Japan. The highest score was made by Mrs. C. Deighton. Among the guests were: Mrs. Manson, Mrs. Deighton, Mrs. H. C. Levett, Miss N. Clemow, Miss G. Mac Donald, Miss M. Gamble, Miss B. Wilson, Miss M. King and Miss M. Grimwade.

A most enjoyable afternoon tea was held in the lounge of the Lyceum Club on Saturday when Mrs. Basil Cadoux, president of the Auckland ex-Service-women's Association, entertained new members. Miss Chilton Button, who is leaving for a visit to Australia, was farewelled and tendered the good wishes of the association. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Andrews, Carrathers, Harris, Tyrell, C. J. Wily, Mackeay, Gould, Mansbridge, Bruce McKenzie and Misses Luxford and Lockner.

At the meeting of the Onehungfe. League of Mothers' on Thursday, a very successful "bring and buy" sale was held. Over to members were present and a much appreciated musical programme was presented. Mrs. Sykes, Mrs. Millar and Mrs. Bibnn being the soloists. Mrs, Benfell, the president, gave a short talk on "Open-air Schools," stressing the fact that' where these have been tried the result Has been freedom from colds and general improvement in the health of the children. Auckland with its beautiful elimate should be able to show even better results than Canterbury, where 17 schools are fully or partly open air. 1 •'• • « •

The annual meeting of the Ladies' Committee of the New Zealand Society for the Protection of Women and Children waa held on Friday. The election of the oommittee for the ensu-

iny year resulted as follows: —President, Mrs. A. E. Devore;. vice-presidents, Mrs. Ernest Davis, Mrs. Preston Chambers; general committee, Mesdanxes L. F. Allison, E. D. Ashton, Beck, Eliot Davis, Doughty, C. V. Houghton, C. Leys, Leeper, F. H. Levieri, McCaw, Macindoe, Lind Mitchell, J. A. Pond, Sharman, Frank Turner, Turtill, Tiarks, Misses Gee, Gerrard, Quayle, and Wilding; hon. secretary, Miss N. L. Dash. A programme for the year's activities was arranged. It was resolved to hold a bridge party on June 20; to make application for a stall at the forthcoming Agricultural and Pastoral Winter Show, and to have a street collection in November.

At the successful annual meeting of the St. John Methodist Ladies' Guild, Ponsonby, the treasurer, Mrs. W. A. Cooke, reported a credit balance of £85 for parsonage renovations, also £7 9/6 for parsonage wear and tear. Greetings and congratulations presented to the Guild by Mrs. Cooke from Rev. H. E. Bellhouse, Dunedin, from East Belt Wesley Guild, in Christchurch, and from Rev. C. H. and Mrs. Olds, Wellington, were warmly received and appreciated. Mrs. G. Smith, retiring president, was elected a vice-president, and also the Guild's delegate to the National Council of Women of New Zealand, Auckland Branch. The officers elected for the year were: President, Rev. A. Mitchell; secretaries, Mrs. H. R. Horsley and Miss Cora Veale; treasurer, Mrs. J. G. Hubbard; jubilee treasurer, Mrs. W. A. Cooke, The convenors of the different committees were: Mrs. S. L. Hirst, house committee; Mrs. Buckley, orphanage committee; Mrs. Jackson, afternoon tea committee. Under the new ministry of the Rev? A. Mitchell, the Guild has every reason to look forward to the new year being even more successful than the one just, closed.

A very enjoyable kitchen tea was given on Saturday evening to Miss Mina Brown, at her mother's residence, Mount Eden, the hostesses being Mrs. Bankier and Miss C. Perkis. The evening passed very pleasantly with dancing, games and musical items. Many useful and beautiful presents were given by the guests. Among those present were: Mrs. Bankier, hostess, beige merline with lace trimmings; v Miss C. Perkis, joint hdstess, apricot and silver lace with Spanish shawl; Miss Mina Brown, the prospective bride, chartreuse georgette model, sequinned and beaded in silver, with Spanish shawl; Miss C. Brown, Luxor red and black crepe de chine, with applique trimming; Miss Rhona Sheppard, Rose Marie satin and gold lace, with Spanish shawl; Miss W. Grice, apricot and silver brocade, with silver trimmings Miss Esther Bankier, ivory silk, - with pink spray; Miss G. Williams, saxe blue lace; Miss Edwards, black satin and silver lace; Miss Johnson, blush pitik crepe de chine and georgette; Miss Delcia Johnson, ivory crepe de chine; Miss Lindsay, jade green georgette and silver lace; Miss C. Foster, pale pink georgette, with rosettes of ribbon; Mrs. E. Payne, foxglove georgette and lace trimmings; Mrs. Cancare, blue crepe de chine Iwith black Spanish shawl. • * • •

A delightful afternoon tea was given by Miss Lowrie Palethorpe at her home, Brightside Road, Epsom, on Saturday, to her girl friends prior to her marriage, which will take place shortly. The rooms were beautifully decorated with masses of autumn-tinted flowers, which were arranged in bowls and placed about the room. Miss Palethorpe received her guests wearing a frock of beige lace finished at the hip with a large tangerine velvet bow, and on the shoulder was a posy to tone. Mrs. Palethorpe wore a frock of cornflour blue chenille georgette and lace. During the afternoon songs were sung by Miss M. Beattie and -Miss Freda Gaudin, a pianoforte solo was given by Miss Linda De Renzy, and Miss Mavis McCulloch recited. Amongst the guests were: Mrs. J. Palethorpe, Miss Myra Emanuel, Miss B.
