(Australian and N.Z. Press Association.)
GENEVA, May IS
Opinion is very divided among the members of the committee appointed by the Economic Commission to consider t lie question of tariffs. The British delegates are pressing for reductions on particularly selected groups of commodities. They are insisting that within each group raw, semi-linished and finished products shall be placed on the li>t t<> include woollens, worsteds, iron, steel and engineering products.
A French delegate, in opposing this, said a rigid principle courted failure. The Australian delegate, Mr. F. L. McDougall. supported this point of view. He said there were non-European countries to consider, and he reminded the committee that any action the League might. take in the economic sphere would affect its prestige in one way or another.
