MUSEUM FINANCE.

HELP FROM LOCAL BODIES. SCHEME FOR CONTRIBUTIONS. LEGISLATIVE AUTHORITY SOUGHT. That the support and maintenance of the Auckland War Memorial Museum was a matter of concern for all suburban local bodies and should not be left to the City Council and a few enthusiasts, was the decision reached at a conference last evening of members of the "City Council Finance Committee, representatives of the suburban local bodies and of the council of the museum. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, presided. The authorities concerned are to be asked to co-operate in promoting legislation to enable them to contribute up to £6000 annually* the contributions to be assessed on a population basis. The following resolution was carried unanimously on the motion of Mr. E. H. Potter, Mayor of Mount Eden, seconded by Mr. G. E. Smerdon, Deputy-Mayor of Newmarket: "This meeting of representatives of the Auckland City Council and of the suburban local bodies endorses the principle of combined responsibility and recommends that legislation be promoted at the coming session of Parliato enable the local authorities to contribute a total sum not exceeding £6000 per annum toward the efficient maintenance and support of the Auckland Institute and Museum, in proportion as is the population of the district of each individual local authority to the whole, the basis of representation on the executive council of the museum to be the Mayor of Auckland, three representative of the City Council and three representatives of the remaining local authorities contributing." Local authorities enumerated as contributories were the City Council, the Mount Eden, Mount Albert, Devonport, Birkenhead, Northcote, Takapuna, Newmarket, Onehunga, Otahuhu and Pukekohe borough councils, Waitcmata, Franklin and Manukau county councils, Ellerslie, Glen Eden, Henderson, Howick, Manurewa, New Lynn, Panmure, Papakura and Papatoetoe town boards and the Mount Roskill, Mount Wellington and One Tree Hill road boards.
