ELECTION EXPENSES.
(Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) WASHINGTON, May 8. A committee set up by the Senate has begun an investigation of the preconvention expenses of Presidential candidates. Eight of the latter have been heard. Mr. Charles Curtis, representative Senator for Kansas, led with an expenditure of £2200. Mr. W. E. Borah, representative Senator for Idaho, was last, with no expenses. Messrs. Borah and G. W. Norris, representative Senator for Nebraska, say tb<>y. are not candidates. Mr. T. J. Walsh, Democrat Senator for Montana, who retired from the contest on May 4, told the committee he could not estimate his expenditure. Additional support was foreseen for Mr. A. Smith, Democrat Governor of New York, j when Mr. G. M. Hitchcock (Democrat), ex-Senator for Nebraska, said Mr. Smith would probably be given all the Nebraska votes At the Democrat convention. j
