BOXING.
PURDY IN AUSTRALIA. FORTHCOMING CONTESTS. A rumour that Charlie Purdy, ■who recently won the Australasian lightweight championship, was knocked out by Tommy Fairhall last week, has beer current in Auckland during the past few days, but it has now been proved that the report is without foundation. Purdy is matched to meet Ernie Izzard at Sydney on Saturday next, and will also take part in three other contests with American boxers within the l next few weeks. It is understood that Purdy will be returning to Auckland for a holiday towards the end of July. Followers of the sport in Auckland would like to see him in action while he is here, but the matter is at present "in the air." A Sydney newspaper states that Purdy and his manger (Pat Connors) have parted company, and that in future the champion's affairs will be managed by Ern Casey, who was very successful with Billy M^Alister. GILLESPIE GOES HOME. NO MATCHES IX VIEW. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUXEDIX. this day. The Australian boxer. Norm. Gillespie, returns to Melbourne by "the Manuka today. The Otago Association was unable to match him with Leckie at the 9.4 limit which he stipulated, and he had no prospect of any further Xew Zealand engagements. In appreciation of his conduct throughout his stay in Dunedin. the association presented him with an oak shield.
