• (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) i WAIHI. this day. In the Magistrate's Court Hector Steele was fined 20/, with costs 20/, for nce'igently driving a motor car. Charles Cole, a coal dealer, *as charged wmi using a motor lorry which, toi gether with its load exeeedeH two tons, without possessing a heavy truck license. Counsel submitted that the motor truck owned by accused was not a motor lorry within the meaning ol the Motor Vehicles or Public Works Acts, but the point was not upheld by the magistrate. Counsel objected to the method of weighing adopted by the inspector, and suggested an adjournment for the purpose of having the vehicle tested on the weighbridge at Paeroa. After hearing the evidence of the defendant, the magistrate said he was satisfied that Cole had more than one ton on the truck. He had filled in a form showing the vehicle to be a one-ton truck, and this must be accepted as correct. He would be convicted and fined £2. with costs 10/. An application made on behalf of Hugh James Woods for exemption from military service was struck out. At a meeting of the Waihi Schools Committee it was resolved to recommend to the Auckland Education Board that + Ir ini V ' M " L Holdsw °rth be appointed to nil -a vacancy on the committee.
