"He is an habitual thief, and. wherever he goes he steals. He does not do any good for himself and is a menace," said Mr. A. Hammond, the Chief Detective, at the Police Court this morning, when Leslie Clifford Arthur Payne (27) appeared and pleaded guilty to charges ot stealing two tents valued at £6 5/ at Turakina Valley; a cycle worth £14 from Mar ton and £5 7/6 in money from Palruerstcen North.

Payne, who is serving a sentence in gaol and is due to be discharged on May 8, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on each of the two last charges, tho terms to commence at the expiration of his present sentence-.
