UPKEEP OF MAORI MISSION.

WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Sessional Committee of the General Synod reported that ordinations numbered 86, compared with 57 in the previous triennial returns. The returns of Sunday school scholars showed a decrease of 1309, compared with the 1923-24 period, despite the increase in the number of teachers. Baptisms increased in number from 9682 in 1923-24 to 8389 in 1926-27, and confirmations had increased by over 400.
Bv far the greatest part of the cost of the work amongst the Maoris in 1926-27, it was reported, was borne by North Island. The Christchurch Diocese gave £543 for this mission, and the Nelson Diocese £92, nothing was received from other South Island dioceses. It was recommended "that in order to secure more support for the work of the Maori mission, especially in the South Island, the mission should be cordinated with the Board of Mi M inn B as soon as possible.
It was recommended that different dioceses be urged ,to use all efforts to provide a minimum stipend of £350, with house and the necessary travelling expenses, for all vicars, whether - of pferi&hes or parochial-districte.
