'VARSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Jf. P. FARRELL'S SUCCESS.

MISS E. STEELE BEST LADY. Highly successful were the first annual swimming championships of the Auckland University College, held in the Tepid Baths on Tuesday evening. As usual with all 'Varsity meetings there a large a,nd enthusiastic attendance. A number of close finishes were seen....

As was expected, J. P. Farrell won the r.o j arris and 100 yards championships, and also the t 33 1-3 yards scratch race. -Miss E. .Steele was easily the most successful of the lady swimmers, finishing first in both the 50 and 100.yards events, getting- second in several others, and winning the diving championship. The form of C. J. McLean, the Otago distance champion, was rather disappointing, Hyauiason beating him over the 220 yards journey in slow time. Miss E. Stockley, one of New Zealand's Olympic swimming representatives gave an exhibition swim. Results are as follows — Ladies' Handicap, 33 l-3yds.—First heat : Miss H. Gallagher, 4s, 1 ; Miss J. Shaw, 7s. '1; Miss V. Osborne, 2s, 3. Second heat : Miss M. Johnston, 4s, 1: Miss W. Webster, 7s, 2; Miss N. Payne, 3s, 3. Final: Miss Webster, 1; Miss Shaw, 2; Miss Jackson, 3. Men's Diving Championship.—Reeve, 1; Johnston and Mitchell, dead heat, 2. Ladles' Diving Championship.—Miss E. Steele, 1; Miss Leltz, 2; Miss Osborne, 3. Men's Championship, 100yds.—J. P.- Farrell, 1; C. J. McLean, 2; Hyauiason, 3. At the first lap Farrell and McLean were together, with Hyauiason close up. Farrell touehed half a yard ahead of McLean at 06 2-3 yds, Hyauiason being a yard away. Farrell drew away over the next lap and won by three yards from McLean, who beat Hyauiason by two yards. Time, 60s.

From the start Farrell, McLean and Hyauiason drew ahead of 'the other competitors, and at the end of the first lap Hyauiason was a yard behind the other two swimmers. He passed McLean ip the second lap, and at 100 yds had drawn ahead of Farrell. At 200 yds Hyauiason still headed Farrell, and in the sprint to the rope he maintained his lead and won by three yards. McLean passed: Farrell, beating him by a yard. Time, 3.2. Inter-faculty Relay.—Law, 1; Engineering, 2.
