DEATH OF CHILD.
KNOCKED DOWN BT CAB.
CORONER NOT SATISFIED.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
DUX ED IN. Monday.
The inquest was concluded this morning, before Mr. J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., coroner, concerning the death of Geoffrey Moncrieff Gilchrist, aged seven years, who was knocked down by a motor car on March 12, near the intersection of George and Union Streets, and who died at his home on April 10. A verdict was returned that deceased died from sepsis, coming from a rupture of the liver, which was caused through his being accidentally knocked down by a motor car.
The coroner said: "I find difficulty in seeing how the motorist did not see the boy and take prompt measures in sufficient time to avoid knocking him down. I am not able to bring in any negligence, but, on the other hand, I am not satisfied that the driver did all a reasonable driver would do. I must leave the matter open with this comment."
