BOXING IN OTAGO.
GILLESPIE'S 810 PUNCH.
MAY SURPRISE T/F.pktp;
(By Telegraph.—Speeial to "Star.")
DUNEDIN, this day. Gillespie, the Australia champion, was dl "8 ra <»d in his contest with unfnth, and although the New Zealander deserved the verdict, a return contest between the pair should be even more closely fought, and with a knowledge he now has of Griffith's style the Australian can be depended upon to vary his tactics accordingly. It must be admitted that he was ill-advised to stand off as he did, vL showed that not only could he absorb plenty of punishment, but that he possesses a terrific right. This is his main scoring asset, and varying with a straight punch to the jaw he drove some solid straights to the body, against which only a very well-conditioned boxer could stand up. All the weight of Gillespie's body is behind this blow to mid-section, and it is a pity his straight work with his left hand is not of so finished a nature. He employed a good left on occasions, but his timing left something to be desired, and with Griffith's uncanny elusiveness he experienced difficulty in finding the right distance. He hooked a solid left to the jaw several times, but rarely landed with his right uppercut. Gillespie established himself with the fans by his vigorous display during the last two rounds, and his next appearance will be awaited with considerable interest by local followers, who realise that the difference between last Saturday's contestants was so slight as to leave a doubt as to the outcome of Gillespie's encounter with Johnny Leckie on April 28.
