HELP FOR BROADCASTING.
AM ADVISORY CO!
LOCAL SOCIETIES UNITE.
The second of the "Public Relations' Committees" that have been fathered by the Radio Broadcasting Company to increase general interest and effort in broadcasting was established last night at a representative gathering of musical and dramatic delegates from various societies. The principal function of the body established last night will be to recommend to the company concerning available talent and its use in the nightly programmes from IYA. Delegates in attendance were: Madame Ainsley (Ains- 1 ley Operatic Society), Messrs. T. T. Garlan (Savage Club), G. T. Lee (Aeolian Orchestra), N. R. Mcßobie (Royal Mala Choir), V. Trask (Athenian Club), Karl Atkinson (Auckland Gramophone Society), J. D. Crawford (Auckland Orphans' Club), C. B. Plummer (Auckland Choral Society), L. E. Lambert (Auckland Bohemian Orchestra), A. R. Harris (general manager of the Broadcasting Company), W. J. Bellingham, director of music, and S. J. Hayden, station director at IYA, J. F. Montague (Auckland Comedy Players), and Dr. Kenneth Phillips (Auckland Society of Musicians). It was decided that these HHaggteq form themselves into a committee, of which Mr. Karl Atkinson was elected chairman. A draft constitution was adopted, and the committee will settle down to business at its first meeting on May 4.
The general manager, in outlining the objects of the company in calling the conference, said the company fully realised that it was dealing with an important public utility, and it was their desire to make contact with listeners through the most efficient channels. In order to get an accurate expression which was truly representative it was necessary to deal with committees of specialists rather than a general committee which represented no definite knowledge or opinion. The failure of such general committees become apparent in many other parts of the world. It was hoped that a specialist committee would have a much more far-reaching result. Considerable work had already been done in respect to forming these committees, a number being already in existence. These included committees representing churches, those interested in child welfare, and musical and dramatic committees.
The following motion was carried unanimously:—"That this conference approve of the Radio Broadcasting Company's proposal for the formation of a 'IYA Musical and Dramatic Committee' for the purpose of stimulating interest in musical and dramatic arts, and those present to form themselves into a committee."
