BANKS IN DEMAND
A decided improvement in the volume of transactions took place on Change this week and several lines sold at improved prices. New Zealand Breweries ordinary shares sold at 45/7'* and 46/, the latter figure being still offered by buyers. Hayward's Pictures also improved in price, sales being made at 20/. Business was also done in Whittome, Stevenson shares ait 45/6, and quite a number of transactions took place in Wilsons Cement at 38/. New Zealand Refrigerating shares sold at 16/0, and Goldsbrough, Mort at 40/3, while buyers occasionally offered 81/6 for snares in tbe Farmers' Fertiliser Co., but no selling price was quoted. An advanoe of 20/ took place in the buying quotation ot N.Z. Loan and Mercantile ordinary stock, for which £101 could now be got. Transactions occurred in Farmers Auctioneering B preference shares at 14/6. Insurance shares 'had sales this wees, 40/6 being paid for New Zealand* and 50/3 for South British. Quito a number of sales were made of Auckland Gss at 22/, and for the contributing issue 16/3 was paid. Woollen company shares were without inquiry this week, and timber sharo* wore ftlso without btMiiMM* P. and O. Deferred stock had regular inquiry at £245, until the third call terday, when an extra £3 was offered. This is an advance of £8 upon the closing rates before the Easter vacation. Northern Steam shares Bold at 15/1, and HuddartParker could be placed at 47/6. Coal shares met with good demand. Pukemiro Collieries sold art 64/6 at the third call yesterday, at which rate there was still a buyer. Taupiri Coal shares had sales at 26/6 and Wcstport Stockton, ordinary issue, sold at 2/5, after which an extra penny was offered. All three issues of Hikurangi Collieries were wanted at late rates, but no sales were recordsd this week. Bycroft, Ltd., shares finned this week, sales taking plsce sit SI/. British Tobacco shares could be placed at 40/3 and Burns, Fhilp at 42/. Inquiry ij mads for Holdsn's Motor shares at 28/0 for Kempthorne, Prosser Drug at 67/6. Mom business was done this week in shares in basking corporations. New Zealands had business at 60/ for the ordinary issue, 21/6 for 15/ pud, and 36/6 for 20/ paid. Union Bank of Australia Stares firmed in pries, sales being mads at £14 14/6 to £14 15/6. Commercial Bank, ordinary i«we, sold at 28/6 and National Bank of New Zealand at £7 1/. Borers came in for National Bank of Australasia, ordinary issue, at £17 18/, but no seller quoted. A sale was made eg Bank Of New Sooth Wales shares at £47 17/6. A lot of business was done this week in rights to the new issue oi tbe Bank of Australia at from 60/ to 62/6, and in fractions of rights from 8/9 to 9/. A fair business was transacted m War Loans and various debentures. The Government 5% per cent issue, maturing 1088, sold from £100 10/ to £100 2/6, and again at £100 5/. The 1088 Loan of 4% per cent ehanged hands at £07 10/, which price is still offered. Boldiera' Inscribed oii per cent Loan had sales at £100 10/ and New Plymouth 5 per cent debentures at £06 10/. The 6 per cent Government Loan, maturing in IS9I, is offered at £101 10/, but buyers quote 20/ under that figure. . . . , Waihi shares met with a little better demand towards the end of the week, sales being made from 10/10 to 11/, with further buyers at the latter rate. Sales were also msde of Ohinemuri Mines at 7/.
