AN IDEAL ONLY.

empire free trade.

Not Attainable In The Present Generation. SIR ROBERT HORNE'B VIEW. 'By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.)

(Received 10.30 a.m.) VICTORIA (8.C.), March 30. "It would be ideal for the- Empire to have among ita various States and between the Dominions and the Motherland a system of free trade," declared Sir Robert Horne, M.P., on Friday.

"Empire free trade would allow the complete, uninterrupted flow of commerce between the Dominions as does the system of inter-State trading in the United States, which gains largely thereby, keeping vast markets to itself, but free trade within the Empire represents the greatest world's trade unit."

Sir Robert declared that Empire free tradb was an ideal unlikely to be attained in this generation, as the various Dominions have their own individual interests to consider and through their tariffs they raise their revenue. Accordingly the Dominions must consider these particular interests.

He added that certain industries required protection in otoe Dominion, and there were other trades which might need it in another, consequently they must for the present work along lines less visionary and more practical by following the preference method within the Empire, by more firmly establishing trade contacts, each unit with the other. —(A. and N.Z. and Sydney "Sun.")
