VISCOUNT CAVE DEAD.
STATESMAN PASSES. (Received 12 noon.) LONDON, March 29.
Viscount Cave, who ' recently underwent an operation from which hp. was recovering slowly, and who was reported yesterday to be unconscious and sink* ing rapidly, has passed away. —(A. and N.Z.and Sydney "Sun.")
George Cave, later Viscount Cave, was born in London in February, 1856. He was educated at St. John's College, Oxford, t of which he was a scholar, taking a first 'in the final classical school. At that time he thought of going in for journalism and wrote for the weekly papers, but in 1880 he was called to the Bar, and even in those early days a distinguished career was predicted for him. He secured a big practice at the Chancery Bar and became a K.C. in 1904, when he was also appointed Recorder of Guildford. From 1913 to 1915 he was standing counsel
for his old university, and from 1914 to 1915 Attorney-General to the Prince of Wales. Entering politics in 1908 as Unionist M.P. for the Kingston Division, he represented it till 1918, when he was made a viscount. It was soon recognised that he was a man of sincerity and judgment with a wide knowledge of affairs, and he became a leading member of hie party. When in 1919 he was made a Lord of Appeal, it seemed as if his political career had ended, but on the break-up of the coalition Mr. Bonar Law appointed him Lord Chancellor in 1922, and he resumed the post when Mr. Baldwin returned to power in 1924. In 1927 he sponsored his proposals for the reform of the House of Lords in that chamber, and later induced the peers to accept a compromise on the Landlords and Tenant* Bill, in order to avert trouble between the two Houses. Lord Cave served on a number of committees and Royal Commissions, including those on land transfer, Southern Rhodesia, voluntary hospitals, trade boards and cruelty to animals. He was chairman of the Munitions Inquiry Tribunal in 1921 and of the British Empire Cancer Campaign.
